UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER (USI)

What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?

A USI is your individual education number for life. It also gives you an online record of your vocational education and training (VET) undertaken in Australia.

It is a reference number made up of 10 numbers and letters that:

  • Creates a secure online record of your recognised training and qualifications gained in Australia, even from different training organisations.
  • Will give you access to your training records and transcripts (available in late 2016).
  • Can be accessed online, anytime and anywhere.
  • Is free and easy to create and
  • Stays with you for life

Who needs USI and why?

The Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment requires all students* studying in Australia to have a USI. Without one, you cannot complete your unit enrolment, receive your final qualification

Your USI will give you access to an online record of the training you have done since 1 January 2015. You will also be able to produce a comprehensive transcript of your training. This can be used when applying for a job, seeking a credit transfer or demonstrating pre-requisites when undertaking further training.

Meeting the USI requirement is easy. You only have to apply once, and it takes minutes to complete. If you’ve studied or undertaken training previously, you might even have one already.

You can find detailed instructions on how to create your USI on the Home page | Unique Student Identifier (usi.gov.au) or you can request the college to do it on your behalf.
